Case Study- Junction (a sound sculpture by Micah Frank)

Using publicly available data from the New York Traffic Management Centre, Micah Frank created a real life soundtrack of taxis in New York City. The score is generated in real-time by thousands of New York City taxicabs, using their position, velocity and overall density to synthesise sounds whilst driving through some of the busiest intersections in the city. Sonification can also be used to help those which visual impairments to cross the road and inside vehicles as an effective method to increase drivers’ situational awareness.  Click here for soundtrack file, info on other uses and UoY report on sonification of environmental data.
