What is social media? Social media is the umbrella term for online communication channels that are shaped around community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. As of 2017, the most popular social media sites were Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Tumblr and Snapchat- all of these sites allow users to create their own profiles and share whatever they want with either the world or a select group of people. Facebook is the biggest social media network in the world with over 1.59 billion monthly active users, however video-sharing social media platform YouTube hosts over 1 billion visitors per month. Social media allows interaction between people regardless of geographic boundaries, and therefore facilitates international exchanges of ideas. In addition, these platforms let people create and produce content that might not get air time in the mainstream media.
